One of the most important requirements for a neurosurgeons is to develop medical diagnostic skills in reading images taken of the patient’s body such as bone injuries through X-rays. They also need to have a thorough understanding of human anatomy as well as good communication skills. At any point, neurosurgeons could be called up to perform difficult medical procedures e.g. cranial reconstruction (surgery on the skull).
In neurosurgery even the slightest mistake could cost the patient his/her life therefore there is no margin for error. This is the reason why neurosurgeons are required to develop a skill of working with power tools such as a medical drill and medical computers that control robotic arms which help with precise incision, lack of skill or concentration while using these tools could have devastating outcomes.
Surgery is not a quick process; it can take several hours, especially surgery on the brain and spine which are the delicate parts of the body. A neurosurgeon must be mentally strong and have the physical endurance to work at a high level of focus and dexterity throughout the surgery.
